cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The charts illustrate changes in the percentage of households that owned three electrical appliances and the average number of hours of housework completed per week in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners increased substantially, with almost all households having these appliances by the end of the period. Washing-machine ownership also rose, although it experienced some fluctuations. In contrast, the amount of time spent on housework declined considerably.

In 1920, washing machines were the most common appliance, being owned by 40% of households, while vacuum cleaners were found in 30%. Refrigerators were almost nonexistent at this time. By 1940, the figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners had risen to 60% and 50%, respectively, whereas refrigerator ownership reached 50%.

The proportion of households with refrigerators then increased sharply to 90% in 1960 and reached 100% in 1980, remaining at this level thereafter. Vacuum-cleaner ownership also rose steadily, from 70% in 1960 to 90% in 1980 and 100% by 2000. Washing-machine ownership, meanwhile, increased more gradually, reaching 70% in 1960, dipping slightly to 65% in 1980, and finally rising to 75% in 2019.

Regarding housework, households spent around 50 hours per week in 1920, but this figure fell steadily to just 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly identified the main trends for both the appliance ownership and the housework hours. The overview is concise and highlights the key inverse relationship between the two datasets. You have selected relevant data points to support your descriptions, such as the 1920 starting figures and the 2019 end points. The comparison between the appliances is well-integrated, and the information is accurately reported. The response is well-structured and covers the requirements of an Academic Task 1 report thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the specific details of appliance ownership, and the housework trends. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'meanwhile', and 'respectively' are used effectively to link ideas and compare data. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, making the text easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-reporting task. Phrases such as 'increased substantially', 'fluctuations', 'almost nonexistent', and 'declined considerably' show a strong command of descriptive language. The use of 'respectively' and 'proportion' adds precision to your report. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'rose' (such as 'surged' or 'climbed') could elevate the lexical range further toward the highest band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'while vacuum cleaners were found in 30%'). The control over tense and punctuation is excellent, with no noticeable errors. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex forms to convey information clearly. The accuracy is high throughout the text, and there are no slips that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader. The grammar is consistent and professional.
