cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The charts illustrate the changes in the percentage of households that owned electrical appliances and the amount of time people spent doing housework in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the ownership of electrical appliances increased considerably over the period. At the same time, the amount of time spent on housework decreased significantly.

In 1920, only a small proportion of households had electrical appliances. The refrigerator was owned by around 10% of households, while the figures for vacuum cleaners and washing machines were approximately 30% and 40% respectively. However, ownership increased over the following years. By 1960, almost all households had a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner, while the percentage for washing machines had also risen to around 70%. By 2019, ownership of all three appliances was very high, with refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching almost 100%.

Regarding housework, people spent around 50 hours per week on household chores in 1920. This figure gradually fell as the ownership of electrical appliances increased. By 1960, it had dropped to approximately 20 hours per week. Finally, in 2019, people spent only about 10 hours per week doing housework.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the trends and selected key features to illustrate the relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. The data is accurately reported, and the comparison between the two charts is logical. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific data points for the 1960-2019 period to avoid slight over-generalisation, as the trends for appliances were not entirely uniform across all categories during those decades. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from the introduction to the overview, then to the appliance data, and finally to the housework data. Cohesive devices such as 'At the same time', 'However', and 'Regarding' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is clear and easy to follow. To improve, you could vary the cohesive devices slightly more to avoid a somewhat mechanical feel in the transition between the two main body paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately. Phrases like 'small proportion of households', 'gradually fell', and 'reached almost 100%' are appropriate for a report of this nature. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context well. While the range is adequate, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items related to trends and statistics, such as 'plateaued', 'a marginal increase', or 'a precipitous decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly throughout. You have successfully used past tense forms to describe historical data. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could experiment with more complex sentence structures, such as using participle clauses or more varied subordinating conjunctions to show the relationship between the two charts more fluidly.
