Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of both charts, successfully outlining the upward trends in appliance ownership and the downward trend in hours spent doing housework. The overview captures the main points effectively, noting that refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership dominated and that housework hours decreased noticeably. However, there are some inaccuracies in reporting the data details; for instance, the writer states that refrigerator and vacuum cleaner both accounted from 30% and 1% to 100%, which misrepresents the starting points and individual trajectories shown in the visual prompt. Despite these minor data-reporting inaccuracies, the response addresses all parts of the task with clear comparisons. Therefore, it fits the Band 6 descriptor well, as it addresses the task appropriately while containing minor under-developed or imprecise data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is structured with logical paragraphing, separating the overview and body paragraphs adequately. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, with transition phrases such as 'Overall, it is readily apparent', 'To commence with', and 'Consequently'. However, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or are grammatically awkward, such as 'While, washing machine increased gradually' and 'On the other side'. Paragraphing and overall arrangement provide a coherent progression from introduction to body details and final trends, but referencing and logical flow between sentences occasionally falter. This aligns well with the criteria for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary adequate for the task, attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'dominated', and 'noticeably'. However, there are several lexical and collocation errors, including spelling mistakes like 'utllized' and 'deacreased noticeablly', as well as awkward phrasing like 'amount of time utllized in houseworks in specific country'. Vocabulary choice is sometimes imprecise, such as referring to 'houseworks' instead of 'housework' or 'household chores'. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a solid Band 5.5, rounded to 6.0 for effort and adequacy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'While the highest hours of work was done in 1920 which deacreased noticeablly'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('proportion of all the appliances had increased', 'the figures was 50 hours') and awkward clause linking ('While, washing machine increased gradually'). While these errors are noticeable and occur frequently, they rarely impede the reader's overall understanding of the text. This demonstrates characteristics consistent with a Band 6 performance.
