Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, selecting and reporting data for appliances and housework time. The overview successfully highlights the upward trends for refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, fluctuations for washing machines, and the significant decline in housework hours. However, the student struggles with some data accuracy and phrasing. For instance, stating that refrigerator ownership 'stood at 0% for refrigerator, 30% for vacuum cleaner and 40% for washing machine' in 1920 is slightly inaccurate based on standard interpretations of the visual data prompt. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is somewhat confusingly expressed as 'accounted by 40% it rose until 1960 and then it started to grow'. Despite these minor data misinterpretations and developmental flaws, all parts of the task are addressed, earning a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, including a brief introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. This demonstrates a clear overall structure. Paragraphing is used adequately. However, logical progression within sentences and paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by awkward cohesive ties and referencing. For example, transitioning with 'Furthermore' or 'In comparison to vacuum cleaner it climbed' creates mechanical and confusing links. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'House per hours' or 'Number per hours'. Cohesive devices are attempted but are sometimes faulty or applied inaccurately. This fits the profile for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data trends such as 'fluctuations', 'dropped significantly', 'abruptly', and 'considerably'. However, there are numerous word choice and collocation errors that detract from precision. Examples include 'alternations' instead of 'alterations', 'timeframe' instead of 'time spent', 'House per hours', and 'accounted by 40%'. The phrase 'Number per hours' is also non-standard. While communication is not severely impeded and meaning is generally clear, these persistent inaccuracies cap the lexical score at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall, it is evident that the figures increased...' and 'By 1920, it is clear from the data that all electrical appliances stood at...'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in prepositions, verb forms, and articles, such as 'reached to 100%' (instead of 'reached 100%'), 'the figures increased for both refrigerator and vacuum cleaner' (missing pluralisation), and 'accounted by 40% it rose' (run-on/comma splice issue implied by syntax). While complex structures are attempted, they frequently contain errors. The control of grammar aligns best with Band 5.5.
