Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully covers the main features of both charts, providing a clear overview that contrasts appliance ownership with the time spent on housework. Key data points such as the 2019 figures (100% for refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, 75% for washing machines) and the 1920 starting points are reported accurately. Comparisons are made across the time periods, notably describing the intersection points and trends. While some specific intermediate years could be explored in greater depth, the response satisfies the requirements of Task 1 well, earning a band score of 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall progression, divided into an introduction, a body paragraph dedicated to appliance ownership, and a final paragraph focusing on housework time. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct datasets. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive or mechanical, with phrases like 'While vaccum cleaner', 'Whereas', and 'Similarly' used awkwardly to link clauses. Referencing is occasionally ambiguous, but the text remains coherent overall, warranting a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms such as 'ownership', 'appliance', 'steadily', 'intersect', and 'accounted for'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('vaccum' instead of vacuum, 'crosing' instead of crossing, 'higest' instead of highest, 'washine' instead of washing) and minor word choice issues (e.g., 'recorded the highest figure at 100%' rather than reaching 100%). These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and adverbial phrases. However, grammatical accuracy is limited by frequent errors, such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'washing machine experience the lowest', 'it continued fell to it lowest level', and awkward fragments like 'Turning to amount of time...'). Punctuation is also erratic in places, particularly with comma splices. Because these errors occur frequently and affect readability, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
