Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the main features of the charts by reporting data for the three appliances over the period from 1920 to 2019, satisfying the basic requirements of an Academic Task 1. However, the student's ability to provide a comprehensive overview and make relevant comparisons is limited. The introductory sentence contains inaccuracies in phrasing (e.g., 'The line chart illustrate information...'). While key trends such as the rising ownership of refrigerators and the steady or fluctuating rates of washing machines and vacuum cleaners are noted, the selection of data points is occasionally disjointed, and some figures contain minor inaccuracies. Overall, the task is addressed, but the development and synthesis of information remain somewhat basic, aligning with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response has some organisation with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and separate body paragraphs for individual appliances. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical sequencing between all sentences. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Looking at first', 'Meanwhile, in the past', and 'Linkwise', which fail to create smooth transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty or mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear. These features are characteristic of a Band 5 descriptor, where organisation is evident but cohesive links are inadequate or inaccurate.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively limited and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'electical', 'appiances', 'poeple', and 'rockated'. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'proportion' and 'fluctuated' (implied), but frequent inaccuracies occur, such as 'use of washing machine shown minimal changes' and 'rockated changed'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a vocabulary range that is minimally adequate for the task, placing the response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are persistent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The line chart illustrate', 'appliance... was'), missing auxiliary verbs (e.g., 'poeple are not used', 'refrigerator and vacuum cleaner shown'), and awkward prepositional usage ('rose 70%'). Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences joined improperly by commas. Because frequent errors cause difficulty and grammatical control is limited, this fits the Band 5 descriptors.
