Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the charts, noting appliance ownership percentages in 1920 and 2019 alongside general trends in hours spent on housework. However, the data reporting contains significant inaccuracies and confusion. For instance, the student states that 'in 2019 100% change in refrigerator were 100%' and confuses appliance ownership percentages with time trends. Furthermore, key comparisons between appliances and time are underdeveloped or confusingly phrased. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of precision and inaccurate reporting place this firmly in the band 5 range, as the response only partially and sometimes inaccurately addresses the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into multiple paragraphs, but the logical progression and overall arrangement are weak. Ideas appear disjointed, and sentences within paragraphs often lack logical links, such as jumping abruptly from refrigerator statistics to washing machines without clear transitions. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and inaccurately, such as the repeated use of 'Finally, we can see that,' and awkward introductory phrases like 'As can be seen from the chart'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly with pronouns and ambiguous time frames. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs fails to guide the reader smoothly through the data. These characteristics align with a band 5 score for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, heavily relying on words directly taken from the prompt such as 'chart', 'housework', 'electrical appliances', and 'percentage'. There are frequent lexical errors and odd collocations throughout the text, such as 'changes percentage', 'demand of refrigerator were rose', and 'hours were spend'. The student attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'fluctuate' and 'sharply', but these are used incorrectly in context (e.g., 'percentage of hours were decreased and fluctuated... sharply'). Because the range of vocabulary is limited and contains noticeable errors that occasionally impede understanding, a band 5 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that result in severe structural errors. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'refrigerator ownership were 0%', 'washing machine were owned', and 'housework were decreased'. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing periods and commas leading to run-on structures. Because errors are frequent, pervasive, and often cause difficulty for the reader in parsing meaning, the writing fits the band 4 descriptor for grammatical range and accuracy.
