Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours from 1920 to 2019. Key features are selected and reported, such as the overall upward trend for washing machines and refrigerators, alongside the declining trend in housework hours. However, the reporting of specific data points contains several minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as claiming 'no owner bought refrigerator in 1920' when the chart likely indicates zero or near-zero, and some confusion with percentages. Despite these minor data reporting slips, the main trends and comparisons are adequately covered, placing the response solidly at Band 6.0 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is structured into four distinct paragraphs, providing an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the charts. There is a logical overall arrangement, and the student attempts to sequence information chronologically. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or poorly managed, such as repetitive use of 'After it' and 'in order to' to indicate time or sequence, which creates choppy transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be more effectively managed to separate the two distinct charts clearly. Consequently, the coherence and cohesion reflect a Band 6.0 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms such as 'ownership', 'electrical appliances', 'housework', and 'decline'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'fluactued' (spelling error), 'sudden rose' (should be 'sudden rise'), and 'climed up'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success and occasional spelling errors that do not severely impede communication. Overall, the lexical resource fits the Band 5.5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and sentence structure is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward syntactic structures, such as 'percentage of ownership of washing machine and refrigerator increased' (missing articles), 'whereases no owner bought', and 'Number of hours of housework per week per household declined in following years'. Preposition and article errors are frequent. Although these errors do not completely obscure meaning, they cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to Band 5.5.
