Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided line chart illustrates the evalution in ownership of three different electrical appliances and number of hours of housework per week in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that washing machine had the highest percentage of households at the beginning of the period, while the least was recorded for refrigerator. After the decades, the proportion of electrical appliances indicated the small changes. For number of hours, the time of household work declined sharply throughout the timeframe.
Regarding the electrical appliances, between 1920 and 2019, washing machine occupied at 40% and this figure increased sharply to 70% by 1960 before it fell to around 60% in 1980. Then, the proportion grew slightly to above 70% until by the end of the period. Meanwhile, refrigerator appliance was soar from 0% to 90% by 1960, making it by far dominant. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends for appliance ownership and housework hours over the given timeframe. The student provides a clear overview and attempts to make relevant comparisons, noting that washing machines started highest while refrigerators were lowest in 1920. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, the student states that the refrigerator proportion was from 0% in 1920, whereas the chart shows it at around 2%. Furthermore, reporting housework hours as declining to 10% in 2019 is slightly inaccurate as the axis measures hours per week, not percentages. Despite these minor data interpretation issues, the core trends are well identified.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overall summary, a body paragraph on electrical appliances, and a final body paragraph on housework hours. Cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'after that', and 'then' are used to guide the reader through the data, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('then... then...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct charts, contributing to a coherent overall arrangement even if referencing is occasionally loose.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'levelled off', 'declined sharply', and 'proportion'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'evalution' instead of 'evolution' or 'evaluation', 'appliance was soar' instead of 'soared', and confusing units of measurement by applying percentage signs to hours. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5 or 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as subordinate clauses with 'while' and 'before'. However, control of grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('washing machine occupied at 40%'), incorrect verb forms ('remined' instead of 'remained'), and preposition errors ('at reaching only 10%'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, the meaning is generally clear and does not cause severe difficulty for the reader.
