Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main trends for appliance ownership and housework hours, and makes some relevant comparisons, such as noting that washing machine holding had the lowest figures compared to the other appliances. An overview is provided at the beginning of the second paragraph, capturing the overall increase in ownership and decrease in housework hours. However, some data points are inaccurate or poorly expressed, such as claiming the refrigerator holding 'accounted for less than 10% in 1920' (it was 2%) or stating housework 'accounted for 50% in 1920' when it was 50 hours per week, not a percentage. The response meets the basic requirements for Task Achievement at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is arranged into four paragraphs, beginning with an introduction and an overall summary. There is a logical progression moving from appliance ownership trends in the earlier years to later developments and housework hours. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or awkwardly used, such as repetitive transitions like 'In contrast' and 'In 1960'. Paragraphing could be structured more effectively to group data logically rather than shifting abruptly between years. Referencing and logical flow are occasionally impeded by awkward phrasing, such as 'washing machine holding had the least'. This demonstrates the characteristics of Band 6.0 Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'ownership', 'appliance', and 'decline'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'washing machine holding', 'refrigerator holding by invidiuals', and 'flucated' (fluctuated). Word choices are sometimes repetitive, relying heavily on terms like 'ownership', 'increase', and 'rose'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general meaning, errors in word choice and spelling prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using time markers and subordinate clauses like 'While the washing machine owned by 40% people in 1920'. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and there are frequent errors, including missing prepositions, incorrect passive/active voice ('the washing machine owned by 40% people'), and clumsy phrasing ('it remained icreased by 2019'). Punctuation and sentence construction are occasionally faulty, causing some difficulty for the reader. These issues align with the Band 5.5 descriptor for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
