Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the main features of both charts, such as the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in weekly housework hours. However, there are notable inaccuracies in reporting the data compared to the visual source. For instance, the student states that the vacuum cleaner started with 0% ownership in 1920, whereas the graph indicates 30%. Furthermore, the washing machine figures are confused, describing it as falling to 55% in 1980 and rising to 70% in 2019, when the chart actually shows different data points. While an overview is present, the inaccurate data extraction and misinterpretation of specific figures prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Ideas are presented, but data reporting needs greater precision and closer alignment with the actual visual information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, body paragraphs for appliance ownership, and a concluding section for working hours. However, the logical flow is somewhat disrupted by awkward transitions and mechanical cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Now'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks smooth progression. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'those products' and 'the important of these equipment', making the connections between sentences feel mechanical rather than fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and frequently hindered by word-form and spelling errors. Examples include 'apppliances', 'type' instead of 'types', 'important' instead of 'importance', 'growed', and 'droped'. While the student attempts less common vocabulary, inaccuracies in word choice and collocation are noticeable throughout the text (e.g., 'working hour of a house reduced', 'ownership odf vacuum cleaner growed dramatically'). These errors require the reader to occasionally re-read sections to grasp the intended meaning, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and article usage, such as 'the houses who owned private electrical apppliances', 'as the time goes', and '50 hours of a week used to spent in household work'. Punctuation is also problematic, including unnecessary comma usage in the opening sentence ('illustrate, the houses'). While the meaning is generally decipherable, the high frequency of errors across basic and complex structures restricts the score to a Band 5.
