Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to cover the main features of the charts, but it struggles with accuracy and fails to provide a clear overview. For instance, the student states that in 1920 'vacuum cleaner is 0', whereas the chart shows it at approximately 30 percent, and some appliance figures are misreported compared to the actual data. Furthermore, the writing lacks a summary or overview paragraph to highlight general trends, such as the overall increase in appliance ownership alongside a decrease in weekly housework hours. The response relies heavily on a mechanical listing of individual data points year by year rather than effectively selecting and reporting main features and making relevant comparisons. Consequently, this performance aligns with the Band 4 descriptors, as the response is somewhat repetitive and contains noticeable inaccuracies in data reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay lacks clear paragraphing, being written as two excessively long, dense blocks of text that merge different data sets without clear separation. Cohesion is very weak and repetitive, relying almost entirely on the additive conjunction 'and' combined with 'but in [year]' to link clauses and sentences, such as '...and vacuum cleaner is 90 but in 1980 percentage of washing machine is 60...'. There is no effective use of cohesive devices or referencing to guide the reader smoothly through the information. Progression is absent because the text simply lists data points sequentially without an overarching structure or logical grouping. This reflects the Band 4 descriptor where information and ideas are not arranged coherently and cohesive devices are inadequate or repetitive.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is extremely basic, repetitive, and heavily dependent on copying the prompt and the raw data labels, such as 'percentage of washing machine', 'refrigerator', and 'vacuum cleaner'. The student repeats phrases like 'percentage of' and 'number of hours' constantly throughout the text without attempting paraphrasing or varying lexical choices. There is a lack of less common vocabulary or appropriate collocation to describe trends or statistical changes (such as 'rise', 'decline', 'fluctuate', or 'remain stable'). Spelling is generally acceptable due to reliance on copied terms, but word choice is restricted and sometimes inaccurate. This fits the Band 4 profile, featuring basic and repetitive vocabulary that strains the reader due to its monotony.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is severely limited. The text consists almost entirely of a massive, run-on compound sentence structure joined by conjunctions like 'and' and 'but', lacking proper punctuation such as periods to separate distinct thoughts. There is a total absence of complex sentence forms or varied clause structures. Errors in grammar are frequent, including missing articles ('percentage of washing machine', 'number of hours of house'), capitalization errors (starting sentences with lowercase letters like 'the households'), and incorrect verb forms. These frequent errors and the lack of basic punctuation cause significant strain for the reader, placing the response firmly at Band 4.
