Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The candidate attempts to cover the main features of the charts, mentioning the three electrical appliances (washing machine, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner) and the hours of housework from 1920 to 2019. However, the response lacks a clear overall trend or overview paragraph, which is essential for a Band 6 or above in Task Achievement. Furthermore, several data points are misreported or vague, such as claiming the appliances all started at '50 to 60 proportion' in 1940 (the refrigerator was 55%, but the vacuum cleaner was 50% and the washing machine was 60%), and stating that appliances reached '97 percentage' in 2000. While the general upward trend in appliance ownership and downward trend in housework hours are acknowledged, the lack of accurate data reporting and a distinct overview keeps this at Band 4.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response is divided into three paragraphs, attempting an introduction, body paragraph on appliances, and body paragraph on housework hours. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by a lack of cohesive devices and extremely run-on, confusing sentences. For instance, the second paragraph consists of one extremely long, convoluted sentence connected by commas and conjunctions ('In the proportion of households... ultimately refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner...'). Paragraphing is present physically, but logical sequencing and referencing are weak, making the text difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in a Band 4.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and frequently inappropriate for an academic task. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'modify' instead of 'changes', 'amount of time' used awkwardly with 'however', and 'growth' used as a verb ('the three are growth'). The student also relies on vague terminology like 'proportion' and 'percentage' without precise control. Spelling and word choice errors are frequent and occasionally strain the reader's understanding, which aligns closely with the Band 4 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response, with very few error-free sentences. The text is dominated by severe structural errors, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences. For example, the opening sentence fails to form a complete, grammatically sound clause ('The line graph presents the modify in ownership... however amount of time...'). Complex structures are rarely attempted accurately, and basic rules of subject-verb agreement and word class are frequently violated. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation cause considerable difficulty for the reader, placing this response at Band 4.0.
