Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two presented graphs illustrate the trend of ownership of electrical appliances (washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner) and weekly spent time in hours to do housework in a particular country for the period of 1920 to 2019.

Overall, percentage of households increased over the recorded period. In contrast, spent time for housework decreased for the same time.

In 1920, only 30 % households had vacuum cleaners, and their percentage constantly increased over the following decades. It climbed to 90 % in 1980 before reaching to 100 % in 2000 and stay unchanged till 2019. Similarly, just 40 % people owned washing machines in 1920. Their percentage increased to 70 % in 1960 before facing the mild decline to 65 % in 1980. Afterwards, figure again touched 70 % in 2000 before rising to little bit over in 2019. However, as can be seen none of the owners had refrigerator in 1920 and then their percentage surge to 90 % in 1960 before reaching to 100 % in 1980. It remained static for following years.

On the other hand, households spent 50 hours in a week to do their housework. Afterwards, their working time quickly dropped to 20 hours in 1960, and continue to fell to 15 hours per week in 1980. Their spending time remained same until new century and went downward to 10 hours per week in 2019

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview accurately captures the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points, such as the 100% ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by the end of the period, are correctly reported. However, there is a minor misinterpretation regarding the starting point for refrigerators; the student states 'none of the owners had refrigerator in 1920', whereas the chart indicates 2%. Nevertheless, the key trends and comparisons are well developed and supported by data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression from an introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the appliances data from the housework hours data. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Afterwards' are generally used effectively to guide the reader through the data. However, a few cohesive links are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'For following years' instead of 'for the following years', and minor referencing issues occur, but these do not impede overall comprehension.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, incorporating terms like 'ownership', 'appliance', 'percentage', 'statically', and 'downward'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some collocations and word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as 'spent time for housework' instead of 'time spent on housework', and 'rising to little bit over'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing lacks precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including time clauses and comparative forms ('In 1920, only 30% households had...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'percentage of households increased' lacking a determiner, 'reaching to' instead of 'reaching', 'stay unchanged' instead of 'stayed unchanged', and 'their spending time remained same'. Despite these frequent minor errors, the meaning is generally clear and does not impede communication.
