IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two presented graphs illustrate the trend of ownership of electrical appliances (washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner) and weekly spent time in hours to do housework in a particular country for the period of 1920 to 2019.
Overall, percentage of households increased over the recorded period. In contrast, spent time for housework decreased for the same time.
In 1920, only 30 % households had vacuum cleaners, and their percentage constantly increased over the following decades. It climbed to 90 % in 1980 before reaching to 100 % in 2000 and stay unchanged till 2019. Similarly, just 40 % people owned washing machines in 1920. Their percentage increased to 70 % in 1960 before facing the mild decline to 65 % in 1980. Afterwards, figure again touched 70 % in 2000 before rising to little bit over in 2019. However, as can be seen none of the owners had refrigerator in 1920 and then their percentage surge to 90 % in 1960 before reaching to 100 % in 1980. It remained static for following years.
On the other hand, households spent 50 hours in a week to do their housework. Afterwards, their working time quickly dropped to 20 hours in 1960, and continue to fell to 15 hours per week in 1980. Their spending time remained same until new century and went downward to 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making appropriate comparisons. The introduction paraphrases the prompt effectively, and an overview is provided, noting the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points are correctly cited from the visuals, such as the 100% ownership rates for refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by the year 2000 and the drop in housework from 50 hours in 1920 to 11 hours in 2019. Minor lapses occur, such as stating 'none of the owners had refrigerator in 1920' (the chart shows 2%), but these are minor inaccuracies that do not detract from the overall clear reporting of trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, body paragraphs detailing appliance ownership, and a final body paragraph focusing on housework hours. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'In contrast', 'Similarly', and 'Afterwards'. However, some minor awkwardness in referencing occurs, such as 'none of the owners had refrigerator' and referencing appliance owners rather than households, but overall cohesion is clear and logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, employing terms such as 'ownership', 'appliance', 'households', 'statically', and 'surge'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with varying degrees of success. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'weekly spent time in hours to do housework' instead of 'time spent on housework per week' and 'rising to little bit over'. However, the lexical range is sufficient to convey the trends accurately without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tenses and comparative structures (e.g., 'It climbed to 90% in 1980 before reaching to 100% in 2000'). However, several grammatical errors and awkward prepositions appear throughout the text, such as 'stay unchanged' instead of 'stayed unchanged', 'reaching to 100%' instead of 'reaching 100%', and 'their spending time remained same' instead of 'remained the same'. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and communication flows well.
