Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points are accurately reported, such as refrigerators starting at 2% in 1920 and reaching 100% by 1980, and housework hours declining from 50 to 11. However, some minor inaccuracies exist in tracking specific trends (e.g., stating the vacuum cleaner surpassed the washing machine and reached a peak in 2000, whereas both actually reached 100% by 2000). Overall, the response effectively addresses the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall progression and is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs covering the two charts. Cohesive devices and linking phrases are used to connect ideas, such as "overall, it can be seen that", "In 1920", and "turning to hours of house hold work". However, paragraphing is somewhat weak as the overview is joined into the same paragraph as the first body point instead of standing alone, and cohesive ties can be slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but punctuation deficits (such as lack of capitalization) occasionally hinder smooth reading.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like "variation", "duration", "household chores", and "upward trend". However, there are numerous spelling errors throughout the response, including "possesion" instead of possession, "propotion" instead of proportion, "vaccum" instead of vacuum, "suprases" instead of surpasses, "increament" instead of increment, and "arount" instead of around. These lexical errors indicate a lack of precision and control over less common vocabulary, keeping the score at band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as "whilst washing machine saw a slight growth" and "a steep decrease between 1920 and 1960 from 50 to 20 hours". However, the text contains serious punctuation and capitalization issues—sentences begin with lowercase letters, and there is a total lack of periods separating distinct thoughts in the second paragraph, resulting in run-on sentences. Grammatical inaccuracies like missing articles (e.g., "the propotion of household") and subject-verb agreement errors ("vaccum cleaner suprases and have") reduce the accuracy of complex forms.
