cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given charts illustrate the changes in ownership of elctrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a single country between 1920 and 2019.

At first glance, all three electrical appliances increases from 1920 to 2019 with maximum percentage of households. Vaccum cleaner and refrigerator have almost the same percent of use by householders in the year 2000 to 2019 respectively. However, their is slightly difference in the starting where refrigerator shows the least percentage in 1920, whereas other appliances have good ratio of households and then increases with the passage of time.

On the other hand, housework which includes washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning gradually decreases with number of hours per week and in the year 1920 there is a large quantity of hours per week and 50 hours per week in the 1920 then every coming years the number of hours per week decreases 10 hours per week in the year 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The candidate attempts to cover the main features of both charts, noting the overall upward trends in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, there are significant inaccuracies and vague descriptions in reporting the data. For instance, stating that refrigerator ownership was 100% in 2000 to 2019 accurately reflects the data, but describing the trends as having 'almost the same percent of use by householders' lacks precision. Furthermore, the description of the hours spent on housework in the conclusion is confused ('decreases 10 hours per week in the year 2019'), failing to accurately report the 1920 starting point of 50 hours and the 2019 endpoint of approximately 11 hours. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of precise data points and vague overviews limit the score to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response shows some overall organization, attempting an introduction, an overview/body paragraph on appliances, and a final paragraph on housework. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor cohesion and clunky transitional phrases such as 'At first glance' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also weak and confusing in sentences like 'Vaccum cleaner and refrigerator have almost the same percent of use by householders in the year 2000 to 2019 respectively.' Paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the entire body of information crammed into just two lengthy and chaotic paragraphs. Cohesive devices are frequently inaccurate or used unnaturally. This aligns best with the Band 5 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with frequent errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. There are several spelling mistakes, including 'elctrical' and 'Vaccum'. Word choice and collocations are often awkward or inaccurate, such as 'good ratio of households', 'slightly difference in the starting', and 'large quantity of hours per week'. While the candidate attempts some topic-related vocabulary like 'ownership of electrical appliances' and 'housework', the persistent lexical errors and repetition of basic terms restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The candidate attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('all three electrical appliances increases', 'their is slightly difference'), missing articles, and malformed clause structures, particularly in the final sentence ('and in the year 1920 there is a large quantity of hours per week and 50 hours per week in the 1920 then every coming years the number of hours per week decreases 10 hours per week in the year 2019'). Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on sentences that require effort to parse. This performance meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
