Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to reach the minimum word count of 150 words, standing at 136 words, which incurs a penalty under Task Achievement. Furthermore, the content contains several inaccurate interpretations of the data. For instance, the student states that the percentage of households using a washing machine 'has declined' and that the use of washing machines 'plateaued after 1980', whereas the graph actually shows a rise from 40% in 1920 to 75% in 2019, with a slight dip in 1980 followed by further growth. An overview is attempted, but key features are misreported or poorly synthesised, resulting in a partial and flawed coverage of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response lacks standard paragraph structure, being broken into several very short, fragmented sentences and disjointed lines rather than cohesive paragraphs. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, as seen with 'on other hand', 'although... there was...', and 'in contrast' used in awkward or grammatically incorrect ways. There is no clear progression of ideas, and the logical relationship between the appliance ownership data and the housework hours data is confused, making the overall arrangement difficult to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive. There are frequent lexical errors and poor word choices, such as 'vocuum cleaner', 'houseworks', 'fugure', and 'preaparing'. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to household appliances and chores, but these attempts are undermined by incorrect spelling and inaccurate collocations. The limited range and constant errors significantly impede communication and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain severe structural errors. Examples include 'The line graph provide data on how changes the ownership in three electrical home appliances', 'from 1920 to 1019', and 'it clearly visible the trend were declined gradually'. Punctuation and capitalization are largely neglected throughout the text. Frequent errors in verb tenses, voice, and clause structures cause considerable difficulty for the reader.
