Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all parts of the visual data by outlining the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours. However, there are significant factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For example, the student states that the washing machine was the highest preferred item in 1920 (40%) and became the least preferred by 2019, and that the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner started at 30% and zero respectively. Looking at the data, the vacuum cleaner started at 30% in 1920, but the refrigerator started at 2% and the washing machine at 40%. Furthermore, the description of trends contains confusion between percentages and rankings. While an overview is attempted, the inaccurate reporting of specific data points pulls the score down into the lower band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is divided into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview paragraph, and then body paragraphs detailing appliance ownership and housework hours. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'however', and 'moreover' are used to structure the text. However, paragraphing and internal cohesion are sometimes affected by awkward phrasing and referencing errors. For instance, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph lacks smooth progression, and mechanical repetition of certain cohesive markers is noticeable. Overall, the essay has a coherent framework, but the execution of cohesion is occasionally faulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, using terms related to data and household appliances such as 'ownership', 'household chores', 'upward trends', and 'significantly'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocational errors throughout the text, including 'electrical equipments' (equipment is uncountable), 'electronic item' used for mechanical appliances like washing machines, and misspelt or misused words like 'applicance' and 'comprised with'. These errors indicate a limited control of word choice and word formation, though communication of the general topic remains mostly intact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory clauses ('In 1920, number of household chores...') and subordinate clauses introduced by 'however'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors such as missing articles ('washing machine was', 'number of hours'), subject-verb agreement issues ('number of hours of housework were'), and tense inconsistencies. For example, 'it increase and fluctuated' uses the base verb form instead of the past tense. These frequent grammatical errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
