cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The data displays the variations in ownership of washing machines, refrigerator and vacuum cleaners and the amount of time invested doing housework in households in one country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the proportion of households with electrical applicances was the highest in 1980,2000 and 2019 which resulted in significantly less time being invested in doing housework over these years in comparision to 1920, 1940 and 1960 where electrical applicances where not that prevalent among households.

In the year 1920, only 30% and 40% of the households had access to vacuum cleaners and washing machines. Thus, households were contributing 50 hours per week doing housework. In the year 1940, a sharp rise was seen in using these appliances which resulted in less than 40 hours being required to finish housework. From 1960 to 2019, there was a dramatic growth in the usage of these electrical appliances which curtailed the number of hours required per week to 20, just above 10 and 10 hours repectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the given timeframe. The response covers both appliance ownership and the hours spent on housework. The overview captures the general inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on chores, noting that appliances became more prevalent over the decades. Specific figures are cited accurately, such as referencing 30% and 40% for vacuum cleaners and washing machines in 1920, and the initial 50 hours of housework. While the student could have elaborated slightly more on the specific plateau of refrigerators in the later decades, the key features are adequately selected and presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression from introduction to overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall summary from the detailed body points. Cohesive devices are employed effectively, such as 'Overall,' 'In the year 1920,' and 'Thus,' guiding the reader smoothly through the text. However, referencing is occasionally slightly repetitive, and cohesive links could be slightly more varied to reach higher bands. Overall, the essay maintains a clear and logical structure throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms such as 'variations,' 'proportion,' 'prevalent,' 'dramatic growth,' and 'curtailed.' There are, however, minor spelling and word-form inaccuracies, such as 'applicances' instead of 'appliances,' and minor collocation issues like 'invested doing housework' instead of 'spent doing housework.' Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly and attempts less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and multi-clause sentences (e.g., 'In the year 1940, a sharp rise was seen in using these appliances which resulted in less than 40 hours being required'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'in using these appliances' rather than 'in the use of these appliances' and a missing comma before numbers in lists (e.g., '1980,2000'). Punctuation slips like 'repectively' also occur. Nevertheless, the errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6.0-6.5 range.
