Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview captures the overall upward trend in appliance ownership and the corresponding decline in housework hours. Key data points are correctly selected and reported, such as refrigerators reaching 100% and housework hours dropping from 50 to 11. Although the text stops short of fully describing the housework trend in detail (omitting the final data point), the main trends are clearly identified and supported with accurate figures from the graphs. This meets the criteria for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 for its clear overview and accurate data selection.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged logically with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and a body paragraph detailing specific data trends. Cohesive devices are used adequately to guide the reader, such as 'In terms of housework,' 'before increasing,' and 'Meanwhile.' Paragraphing is logical, grouping the introduction and overview separately from the detailed body content. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive (e.g., 'before increasing to... before rising gradually...'). Overall arrangement is coherent, fitting comfortably into Band 6.5 to 7.0, with clear progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using terms such as 'proportion,' 'ownership,' 'dramatic rise,' and 'witnessed a considerable shift.' However, there are several spelling and typographical errors throughout the text, including 'numebr' instead of number, 'exepriencing,' 'percentag,' 'owening,' 'vaccum,' 'menaing,' and 'afterwad.' While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. Less common lexical items are attempted with some success, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participle phrases (e.g., 'before increasing to 70% by 1960'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'the how the percentage' (redundant article/preposition) and missing words (e.g., 'about 64' missing percent or appliances, and 'all household own one vaccum' lacking pluralisation and past tense consistency). Despite these issues, the majority of sentences are understandable, and complex structures are attempted with moderate success. This corresponds well to a Band 6.0.
