Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs provide information about the proportion of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours doing housework in a specific country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, ownership of three appliances increased substantially over the period, with refrigerator experiencing the most dramatic growth. In contrast, the amount of time spent on housework declined considerably.

In 1920, refrigerator were almost non-existent at only about 5%. By 1940, it record a marked rise with approximately 55%. It then climbed progressively in 1960 with 90%. In the final years, refrigerator ownership increased rapidly, reaching approximately 100%. Vacuum cleaner are already owned in 1920 with 30%, which shows a steady increased until it reached 100% in 2019. Conversely, waching machine are the most common use in the initial year with 40% owned in one country. 1960, it showed an upward trend with 70%, however undergone fluctuations, which decline by around 5% in 1980 and slightly increased to approximately 70% in 2019.

Meanwhile, the time spent doing housework fell consistently. In 1920, 50 hours per week are consumed, this figure dropped to roughly 35 hours per week in 1940. Then, 20 hours per week in 1960 before it plummeted in the remaining years until it reached at around 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of both graphs. Key trends, such as the dramatic rise in refrigerator ownership and the steady decline in housework hours, are accurately identified and supported with specific data points from the visual input (e.g., reaching approximately 100% in 2019 for appliances, and falling to roughly 10 hours per week for housework). The comparison between appliance adoption and the reduction of housework time is well integrated. While there are a few minor numerical inaccuracies in the detailed descriptions—such as stating that refrigerator ownership started at 5% in 1920 when the data indicates 2%—the overall response is well-developed and provides a comprehensive summary of the provided charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with a well-formulated introduction, moves into a clear overview paragraph, and then breaks down the details of appliance ownership and housework hours into logical body sections. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Conversely', and 'Meanwhile' are used appropriately to guide the reader through comparisons and shifts in focus. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the overarching summary from specific data descriptions, though paragraph breaks could have been used more granularly to separate the appliances from the housework data. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to the overall coherence of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, demonstrating attempts at less common lexical items such as 'proportion', 'substantially', 'dramatic growth', 'progressively', and 'plummeted'. However, there are noticeable word form and spelling errors that detract from precision, such as 'refrigerator' used as a plural or missing an article ('refrigerator were almost non-existent'), 'record' instead of 'recorded', 'increased' instead of 'increase', and 'waching' instead of 'washing'. Despite these slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including introductory subordinate clauses and comparative structures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, with frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. Examples include 'Vacuum cleaner are already owned' (plural/singular mismatch and passive voice error), 'waching machine are the most common use', and '50 hours per week are consumed, this figure dropped' (comma splice). While some complex sentences are formed correctly, the accumulation of basic grammatical errors places this response firmly in the Band 6 descriptor range, where errors occasionally cause slight awkwardness for the reader.
