Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs track changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the ownership of electrical appliances increased significantly, while the number of hours spent on housework per week per household declined.

The proportion of households owning a refrigerator rose sharply, reaching approximately 90% by 1960, before continuing to increase until ownership became universal in 1980. Similarly, the proportion of households owning a vacuum cleaner increased, with ownership becoming universal in 2000, whereas, the proportion of households owning a washing machine fluctuated. Ownership of washing machines increased gradually untill 1960, before declining in 1980 and rising again in 2000. Ownership of washing machines became universal in 2019.

Owing to the increasing trend of electrical appliances ownership, the number of hours spent of housework per week decreased. The number of hours spent on housework decreased from 50 hours to 20 hours in 1960 and kept declining till it reached it's lowest point in 2019, where only 10 hours per week were spent on housework.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview of the main trends and selecting relevant data to make meaningful comparisons. The student notes the significant increase in appliance ownership and the corresponding decline in housework hours. However, there are a few minor factual inaccuracies regarding the visual data. For instance, the student states that ownership of washing machines became universal in 2019, whereas the graph indicates it reached approximately 75%. Additionally, the final housework figure is reported as 10 hours, while the chart shows roughly 11 hours. Despite these minor discrepancies, the overall response successfully fulfills the requirements of Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs outlining specific data points. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through the information, such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', and 'whereas'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the appliance trends from the housework hours. Although referencing is mostly clear, a minor punctuation error ('whereas, the proportion') slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the logical progression is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'ownership', 'proportion', 'fluctuated', and 'universal'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though a few minor errors occur, such as the spelling mistake 'untill' instead of 'until' and the awkward phrasing 'electrical appliances ownership' instead of 'ownership of electrical appliances'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is adequate to communicate the main features of the charts clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'while', 'before', and 'owing to'. There are instances of good control over grammar, but a few noticeable errors persist. For example, there is a punctuation error after 'whereas' and a punctuation mistake with the possessive pronoun 'it's' instead of 'its' in 'until it reached it's lowest point'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded.
