Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview attempts to capture the key trends, noting the high ownership of vacuum cleaners and refrigerators and the overall decline in housework hours. However, there are some inaccurate details, such as stating that washing machines experienced the smallest share at the end (refrigerators and vacuums both reached 100%, but washing machines were at 75%, making them the lowest, which is a misinterpretation of relative scale or phrasing). Data points are generally reported, though with some minor inaccuracies (e.g., stating refrigerators were at 0% in 1920 when the chart shows 2%, and stating they reached 100% in 2000 instead of 1980). Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it at a Band 5.5 to 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, and then body paragraphs detailing the charts. However, paragraphing and sentence boundaries are poorly controlled, with numerous run-on sentences and missing spaces after punctuation marks (e.g., '1920,in 1920 maching machine', 'chart, it shows'). Cohesive devices are minimal and often misused or mechanical. While there is a logical attempt to separate the two charts, the progression within paragraphs is disrupted by frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, leading to a choppy and disjointed reading experience. This aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting words such as 'appliance', 'flactuated', and 'proportion' equivalents, but it is marred by frequent spelling mistakes ('throught', 'yeras', 'changement', 'marginly', 'washinf', 'maching') and word formation errors. Less common vocabulary items are attempted but lack precision and accuracy. The repetition of basic structures and lexical items limits the range, and errors in word choice sometimes cause strain for the reader. This performance fits Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies, missing prepositions, and severe punctuation issues such as comma splices and missing spaces (e.g., 'refrigerator is not use', 'at stood at 100%', 'number of housework represented'). Complex structures tend to be faulty. Errors occur frequently throughout the text and occasionally impede communication, placing this response firmly at Band 5.0.
