Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main trends in household appliance ownership and housework hours from 1920 to 2019. However, the response contains significant inaccuracies and misinterpretations of the data. For instance, the refrigerator ownership in 1920 is incorrectly stated as 0% (it was 2%) and later referenced as 80% in 1940 (it was 55%). Additionally, the number of hours spent on housework is confusingly referred to as percentages (e.g., '32% of hours spent'), which demonstrates a misunderstanding of the units on the graph. While an overview is attempted, it is grammatically broken and unclear. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the overall progression is severely hindered by confusing phrasing and awkward transitions such as 'On having a cursory glance at line graph' and 'Proceeding further'. Cohesive devices are frequently misused or mechanically applied, and referencing is often unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow the connection between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical flow is weak. This performance aligns with the Band 5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very limited and often inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. The student struggles with basic collocations and word forms, such as 'time spend', 'number of time spend', and confusing 'hours' with percentages ('32% of hours spent'). There are also several spelling and word choice errors like 'lucid' used incorrectly. The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, but noticeable errors cause frequent difficulty and confusion for the reader, placing it at a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts some complex sentence structures, but these are almost invariably faulty and fraught with grammatical errors. Examples include 'the percentage of household with vacuum cleaner while the decreasing number of time spend can be seen' and 'this figure was remain increasing which remain decreased till 1960, with was depicted'. There are persistent errors in verb tense, voice, and subject-verb agreement. Simple sentences also contain basic mistakes. Because errors are frequent and often obscure the meaning of the sentences, a Band 4.5 or 5.0 is warranted; a score of 5.0 is given as some basic structures are successfully formed.
