Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The candidate attempts to address the task by discussing appliance ownership and housework hours, but the response suffers from significant data misinterpretation and a lack of clear overview. For instance, the student writes that 'the percentage is only 50%, however in 2019 the percentage increases 30% to 40%', which is mathematically confusing and inaccurate regarding the visual data. Furthermore, terms such as 'percentage' are incorrectly used to describe the number of hours of housework per week (stating 'the beginning percentage is 50%'). While some main features are mentioned, such as the general rise in appliances and the decline in housework hours, the overall response lacks fully developed comparisons and accurate reporting, falling short of higher band requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organisation of the text is very weak. The response is presented in an unmanaged block of text with only two paragraphs, failing to use paragraphing logically to separate different charts or trends. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore', which do not accurately signal logical relationships between the ideas presented. The progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by confusing sentence structures and abrupt shifts in topic, making the overall flow difficult for the reader to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical range is limited and frequently inaccurate. The student struggles with basic collocations and word forms, such as 'electrical appliance' (instead of appliances), 'Refrigerator demand raised', and 'washing machines started to boost'. The inappropriate use of the word 'percentage' to describe absolute numbers of hours ('the percentage is only 10% in 2019') demonstrates significant limitations in vocabulary control. Spelling is generally acceptable, but frequent word choice and phrasing errors impede clear communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. There are frequent errors in basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and tense usage, such as 'the number of households electrical appliance are dramatically inclines' and 'Vacuum cleaners is going to used by homes mostly in 1940 than it's continues to increase'. Complex sentence structures are attempted, but they are almost always faulty and non-standard. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on sentences and clauses that obscure the intended meaning.
