cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given charts provide information about ownership of electrical appliances and compare this with the amount of time spent on housework in households in one country from 1920 to 2019.

To begin with, it is clearly evident that number of electrical appliances surged by the year 2019, as compare to 1940 as the percentage is only 50% however, in 2019 the percentage increased 30% to 40%.

On the other hand, it is clearly shown in the graph along with the years passing, number of hours spent on per housework per week was drastically reduced. We noticed that the initial percentage was 50% but we saw a dramatic decline in 2019 although the percentage is only 10% in 2019. Furthermore, the electrical appliance such as washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners are the source of electrical usage in country. Refrigerators demand raised in 1940 to 2000 whereas washing machines started to boost in 1920 to 1960, after that it remains constant. Vacuum cleaners was the most preffered appliance in 1940, and it continues to be the most favoured choice even till 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address all parts of the prompt by discussing both appliance ownership and housework hours, providing an overview of the general trends. However, the data interpretation suffers from significant inaccuracies and confusion regarding percentages and numbers. For instance, the student states that the initial percentage in 1940 was 50% and 'the percentage increased 30% to 40%', which does not accurately reflect the specific data points in the line graphs. Furthermore, mixing up 'percentage' and 'hours' (e.g., 'initial percentage was 50%... percentage is only 10% in 2019' for housework hours) impedes clear reporting. While main features like the decline in housework and the general rise in appliance ownership are noted, the support and details are muddled. This performance aligns with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, starting with a standard introductory sentence, but the overall progression is difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'To begin with', 'as compare to', and 'On the other hand', which do not establish logical relationships between the ideas presented. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph structure are weak; the body paragraphs clump together disparate observations about appliances and housework hours without clear topical separation. Sentences frequently lack smooth transitions, leading to a disjointed reading experience. This level of organisation and cohesion corresponds to Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice and collocation that cause confusion for the reader. Examples include 'number of electrical appliances surged', 'Refrigerators demand raised', and 'washing machines started to boost'. The student also uses incorrect terminology, substituting 'percentage' when discussing hours of housework per week. While some task-relevant words like 'ownership', 'appliances', and 'housework' are present, the limitations in range and frequent lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. For example, clauses are clumsily joined, as seen in 'as compare to 1940 as the percentage is only 50% however, in 2019 the percentage increased 30% to 40%.' Punctuation and phrasing errors are frequent throughout the response, such as 'number of hours spent on per housework per week' and 'Vacuum cleaners was the most preffered appliance'. These persistent grammatical and mechanical errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect the descriptors for Band 5.
