IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The charts illustrate the changes in the ownership of various electrical appliances, such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, along with the number of hours allocated doing housework per week from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the ownership of all three types of electrical appliances increased over the period. However, in contrast, the number of hours doing household activities per week declined over the same period.
Looking first at the percentage of households with electrical appliances, roughly 3% of families owned the refrigerator in 1920, which was the lowest figure among others. However, it grew sharply, reaching 100% in 1980. Additionally, the ownership of vacuum cleaner stood at exactly 30% in 1920 before increasing sharply and reaching 100% in 2000. Furthermore, washing machine which accounted for 40% of ownership in 1920 grew slightly, reaching 70% in 1960. Afterwards, it fluctuated before stabilizing and reaching over 70% in 2019.
Turning to the number of hours that was spent doing household activities, such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning per week, in 1920, the figure stood at 50 hours. Afterwards, it gradually declined, reaching 20 hours in 1960 before dropping steadily and reaching almost 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours chart. Main trends are accurately reported, such as the rise in appliance ownership (e.g., refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching 100%) and the corresponding decline in housework hours from 50 hours in 1920 to 11 hours in 2019. Comparisons are made where relevant, and the data is appropriately cited. The response satisfies all requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 7.5 to 8 level, though minor details could have been integrated slightly more tightly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. An introductory paragraph paraphrases the prompt, followed by a concise overview paragraph that captures the main trends. Body paragraphs are logically divided by chart type: one for appliance ownership and another for housework hours. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'Additionally', 'Furthermore', and 'Turning to' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, demonstrating clear logical sequencing throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited for Task 1, utilizing appropriate reporting verbs and phrases like 'increased over the period', 'grew sharply', 'fluctuated before stabilizing', and 'gradually declined'. There are minor slips in article usage and collocation, such as writing 'along with the number of hours allocated doing housework' instead of 'allocated to doing housework' or omitting a plural article in 'such as washing machine'. However, the vocabulary is flexible enough to allow precise reporting of trends, earning a solid Band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
A good mix of simple and complex sentence structures is used throughout the response, including relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'which was the lowest figure among others' and 'reaching 100% in 1980'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate, with good control over tense usage when describing past trends from 1920 to 2019. Minor punctuation or preposition errors occur occasionally, but they do not impede communication or obscure meaning, fully supporting a Band 7 descriptor.
