Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to cover the main features of both charts, noting the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, the development is weak and contains several inaccurate descriptions of the data. For instance, the student states that washing machine ownership dropped 'upto 10 %' between 1960 and 1980, whereas the graph shows it fell slightly from around 70% to 65%. Furthermore, the second paragraph awkwardly claims that housework hours decreased from '50 % to 10%', misinterpreting the unit of measurement as a percentage rather than hours per week. While the general overview is present, the inaccurate reporting and lack of fully developed comparisons place this response at Band 4.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The essay is heavily fragmented with bullet points and short, disjointed sentences rather than a cohesive text. There is an absence of logical paragraphing, with ideas scattered across multiple broken sections. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused (e.g., 'In first chart... In second chart... In second paragraph...'). The progression of information is difficult to follow because referencing is unclear and relationships between the data points are not adequately signaled. This lack of structural control and coherent arrangement aligns closely with the Band 4 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms directly lifted from the prompt, such as 'electrical appliances', 'washing machine', 'refrigerator', and 'vacuum cleaner'. There are noticeable limitations in lexical range, with frequent awkward phrasings like 'how many hours is being used in during house work' and 'remain constant to till'. Spelling and word-choice errors are evident throughout the text (e.g., 'alomost', 'remian'). Because the vocabulary is minimally adequate to communicate basic concepts but features frequent errors, it fits the Band 5 criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are consistently flawed. There are frequent structural errors, such as missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and faulty verb forms ('the percentage of household with electrical appliances shown', 'is increased', 'then drop 1960 to 1980'). Punctuation is also problematic, with erratic spacing around commas. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak grasp of basic sentence structure, corresponding to a Band 4.5 level.
