Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover both charts, providing an overview and mentioning some main trends, such as the increase in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the vacuum cleaner started at 0 percent and the refrigerator at 30 percent in 1920, whereas the correct figures from the chart are 30% and 2% respectively. Furthermore, the description of the trends becomes quite confused towards the end. While the overall shape of the response addresses the prompt, these factual errors and misreadings of the graph prevent it from reaching a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organised into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing sentences and poor referencing. The transition phrases such as 'By the contrast' are awkward, and phrases like 'The last time of appliance is called that washing machine' are extremely difficult to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is often faulty or mechanical, making it hard for the reader to smoothly navigate the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The lexical range is limited and frequently strained by inappropriate word choices and non-standard collocations. Examples include 'figure of time spend' instead of 'amount of time spent', 'masured in percentages sterling', and 'dcline' instead of 'decline'. There are also awkward phrasings such as 'stop on same level' and 'finishing the level far less'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary related to appliances and housework, the high frequency of lexical errors and odd phrasing restricts the score to this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are persistent issues with tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'vacuum cleaner started on 0 percentage' and 'was starting to decreasing after 1920'. Punctuation and article usage are also problematic, with missing articles ('percentage of households' instead of 'the percentage') and run-on phrasing. These errors frequently impede communication and detract from the clarity of the text.
