Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)

cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two line graphs illustrate changes in the ownership of electrical appliances, namely washing machines, refrigerators, and  vacuum cleaners, as well as the amount of time spent on housework in households in a country over the period from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is evident that the figures exhibited contrasting trends over the given period, with some figures increasing, while others declined.  Refrigerators recorded the highest figure among the electrical appliances throughout the period. On the other hand, the number of hours spent on housework per week recorded the lowest figure by the end of the period.

Looking at the details, washing machine ownership stood at roughly 40% in 1920 and then increased gradually to approximately 70% in 1960. Thereafter, it fell to just under 65% in 1980, after which it increased steadily to 68% by the end of the period. Furthermore, vacuum cleaner ownership started at around 30% in 1920, following which it rose sharply to exactly 100% in 2019. Moreover, refrigerator ownership was at nearly 1% in 1920. Subsequently, it increased progressively to exactly 100% by the end of the period.

Looking most closely at the data, in 1920, the number of hours spent on housework per week started at just over 50 hours per week and then fell dramatically to nearly 19 hours in 1960. Thereafter, it fell to just under 11 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the two charts. An overview is provided, highlighting the contrasting trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. Key data points are cited accurately, such as refrigerator ownership starting at a low level in 1920 and reaching 100% by 1980, and washing machine trends being described effectively. The figures cited generally align well with the provided visual data, with only minor approximations that are entirely acceptable for Task 1. The response is well-supported with specific details from both graphs, fulfilling the requirements for a high band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, an overview paragraph, details regarding appliance ownership, and a final paragraph focusing on the hours spent on housework. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are handled well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Looking at the details', 'Thereafter', and 'On the other hand'. Although referencing and transitions are generally smooth, there is occasional slight repetition in how paragraphs are introduced, which keeps the cohesion slightly short of absolute mastery, but overall organization is clear and logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Less common lexical items and phrases are used effectively, such as 'gradually', 'progressively', 'rose sharply', and 'contrasting trends'. Word choices are generally accurate and appropriate for describing statistical data and trends. While there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or slightly unnatural phrasings—such as 'recorded the highest figure among the electrical appliances throughout the period' rather than referring to the percentage of households—the vocabulary is more than adequate to convey precise meaning without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response exhibits a good variety of complex sentence structures, including participial phrases and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'as well as the amount of time spent on housework', 'after which it increased steadily'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is strong throughout. Minor errors do occur, such as a slight awkwardness in phrasing or punctuation, but these are rare and do not impede communication at all. The control over complex forms demonstrates solid grammatical competence worthy of a Band 7.5.
