Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the two graphs, noting the rise in appliance ownership and the fall in housework hours. However, the development is limited and contains some inaccuracies or incomplete sentences, such as 'The use of electrical appliances such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner.' Furthermore, the final paragraph cuts off abruptly with an incomplete thought ('Although, household work from 1920 to 2019 has dropped...'). The overview is somewhat basic but present. Overall, it satisfies the basic requirements of Task 1, but the lack of full development and awkward phrasing restrict it to a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into four paragraphs, including an introductory paragraph, an overview, a body paragraph, and a truncated concluding sentence. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by fragmented sentences and poor transitions. For example, sentences like 'Number of hour of households work includes washing clothes...' lack connection to the surrounding context. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs themselves are internally disjointed. Cohesive devices are minimal and often misused (e.g., 'Although' used inappropriately at the end of the text). Due to these organizational and cohesive weaknesses, it fits the Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate basic vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'appliances', 'ownership', 'households', and 'declined dramatically'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocation errors throughout, including 'linegraphs', 'households chores', 'number of hour', 'electical appliances have surge', and 'vaccum cleaner'. Spelling errors ('vaccum', 'remined') and word-formation issues are noticeable. The range is limited and repetition occurs. These issues cause some difficulty for the reader and align with a Band 5.0 performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('percentage of households'), subject-verb agreement issues ('refrigerator from 1920 to 1960 increased significantly and in 1980 their is a moderate change'), and fragment sentences. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with sentence boundaries and incomplete structures in the final paragraph. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause confusion, the writing is characteristic of Band 5.0.
