Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to cover all parts of the visual data by reporting on the ownership of electrical appliances and the hours spent on housework between 1920 and 2019. An overview is attempted in the opening paragraph, stating that the ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached 100% by 2019. However, the task achievement is hindered by factual inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that the ownership of washing machines reached 100% and remained constant for 19 years, whereas the graph actually shows washing machine ownership at around 75% in 2019. Additionally, the data points for refrigerators and vacuum cleaners contain confusing phrasing and misread percentages in the intermediate years. Consequently, while the general trends are mentioned, the lack of precise data reporting limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into an introduction and three body paragraphs, attempting a logical progression over time. However, cohesion is frequently faulty or mechanical. The student relies on basic transitional phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'In 1960', and referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'the percentage of households of refrigerator' instead of 'households owning refrigerators'. Paragraphing is present, but the overall structure lacks smooth flow and sophisticated cohesive devices. The relationships between sentences are occasionally obscured by awkward phrasing, placing this text firmly in the band 5 range for cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic summary but lacks range and precision. The student repeats terms such as 'percentage of households' and 'ownership of' frequently. There are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'repidly' (rapidly), 'increases' instead of increased, and awkward collocates like 'percentage of households of washing machines'. Less common lexical items are rarely attempted successfully. Spelling and word-choice errors are frequent enough to cause some distraction for the reader, although communication is generally maintained.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions. Examples include 'remains constant on 100%' instead of at 100%, 'ownership of vacuum cleaner were increasing', and 'than the ownership was again increases'. Punctuation is basic, and dependent clauses often contain grammatical flaws. While simple sentences are generally understandable, attempts at more complex structures frequently result in errors that demand closer attention from the reader.
