IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The two charts illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances namely, a washing machine, a refrigerator and a vacuum cleaner, and the time spent doing house chores in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, there has been an increase in the households owning the electrical appliances, on the other hand, the number of hours spent doing housework per week has significantly reduced over the years. The washing machine began as the most predominant appliance but was overtaken by the refrigerator and the vacuum cleaner, ending as the least at the end of the period.
In 1920, the washing machine was owned by 40% of the households, this proportion later saw a gradual rise to its peak of 70% in 1960. Only 30% had a vacuum cleaner in 1920, this rate later rose steadily before overtaking the washing machine in 1960. It later levelled off in 2000 at 100
%. The regrigerator was not common in 1920, with a percentage just above 0%. however, this experienced a dramatic rise to 90% in 1960 and later remained stable at 100% in 1980.
Hours spent doing housework saw a sharp dive from 50 hours per week in 1920, to 20 hours in 1960, before a further drop to about 15 hours in 1980 and this remained stable upto 2000 and ended at 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The candidate presents a clear overview of the main trends shown in the two charts, noting the general increase in appliance ownership alongside a decrease in weekly housework hours. Key features are accurately reported and compared, such as the washing machine starting as the most common appliance in 1920 (40%) and ending as the least in terms of growth trajectory compared to the others reaching 100%. Data is well selected and supported with specific figures from the visual data, such as refrigerator ownership reaching 90% in 1960 and peaking at 100%. While there is a minor typo with a line break in the number 100%, the overall task requirements are fully satisfied with a clear, well-developed response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is logically organised into four distinct paragraphs, featuring an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for appliances and housework hours. Progression is clear throughout, and information is well sequenced. Cohesive devices are used adequately to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In 1920', and 'It later levelled off'. However, paragraphing and sentence transitions could be slightly more polished to achieve a higher band, as some transitions rely on standard chronological listing rather than more sophisticated structural links. Overall, the structural flow is easy to follow and meets the Band 7 criteria comfortably.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task, incorporating less common lexical items such as 'predominant', 'proportion', 'gradual rise', and 'dramatic rise'. There are a few minor spelling and lexical errors, notably 'regrigerator' instead of 'refrigerator', and a minor formatting issue with '100%'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is flexible enough to convey precise meanings regarding trends, peaks, and stasis, successfully demonstrating an adequate to good lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writer demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses and passive-like constructions ('was overtaken by', 'Hours spent doing housework saw a sharp dive'). There are several error-free sentences, alongside a few punctuation or stylistic slips, such as comma splices ('in 1920, this proportion later saw' and 'in 1920, this rate later rose'). Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled, and these minor structural errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
