cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The charts illustrate the fluctuations in the buying of elctrical appliances and corresponding amount of work people used to spend doing housework in households for a particular country from 1920 to 2019,

Taking ownership of wachine machines during this time first, the chart shows much alterations as compared to refrigerator and vacuum cleaner but overall an incresing trend is observed.Although all appliances lines show a rising trend, the line for refrigerator shows quite large growth between 1920 and 1960 and somewhat constant kind of usage aftwards till 2019,The possession of vacuum cleaner is definitly simpler to explain as they showed constant increment in their demand from 1920 to 2000 and little linearity afterwards,

The chart for housework reflects preferences of people during different tie periods. As figured in second chart, the population of 1900s were spending longer time for their households then their 2000s versions. The line lowers straight from 1920 to 1960 and decreases at lower till 2019.

If we were to relate these two figures we can easily conclude the fact household working hours depent directly to reliance on electrical appliances. The time with lower electrical appliances illustrated more houseworking hours and most of the work was manual but later era showed more dependence on these appliances to automate our tasks and correspnding decremented amount of time doing our household work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to cover the main features of both charts, noting the overall upward trend in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, there are notable inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting. For instance, the reference to washing machines having 'much alterations' is vague, and the description of the refrigerator trend missing key details. Furthermore, the phrasing 'population of 1900s were spending longer time for their households then their 2000s versions' is awkward and imprecise. While the general overview and relationship between appliances and housework hours are identified, the lack of precise data points and vague reporting restrict the response to Band 5.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs, which helps structure the response, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. Punctuation errors are common, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'first, the') and run-on clauses (e.g., '1920 to 2019,Taking'). Transitional phrases are sometimes misused or overly conversational, such as 'If we were to relate these two figures we can easily conclude...'. Progression between ideas lacks smoothness, making the overall flow disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted but lacks sufficient internal logical linking, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student demonstrates a limited vocabulary with noticeable spelling errors ('elctrical', 'wachine', 'incresing', 'aftwards', 'definitly', 'depent', 'houseworking', 'correspnding', 'decremented') and inappropriate word choices (e.g., '2000s versions', 'houseworking hours'). While some topic-related vocabulary is attempted, such as 'appliance ownership' and 'automate our tasks', the frequent lexical and spelling errors impede fluency and cause strain for the reader. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, corresponding to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in prepositional usage and verb agreement, such as 'household working hours depent directly to reliance' and 'decreased at lower till 2019'. Pronoun reference and clause structures are often confused, as seen in 'The time with lower electrical appliances illustrated more houseworking hours'. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band, positioning it at Band 5.0.
