Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. An adequate overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the overall trends of rising appliance ownership and declining housework hours. Key data points are accurately cited, such as refrigerator ownership starting at 2% in 1920 (written as 0% by the student, which is a minor discrepancy from the transcription but acceptable) and reaching 100%, and housework hours falling from 50 to 11. The figures are appropriately supported and compared throughout the body paragraphs. Minor issues in precise data reading do not detract from a clear, well-supported task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph paraphrasing the prompt, followed by a clear overview, two detailed body paragraphs, and logical sequencing of data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate appliance ownership from housework hours. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable flexibility, such as 'Overall', 'To commence with', 'By contrast', and 'Meanwhile'. However, there are minor cohesion and punctuation faults, such as missing spaces before punctuation marks ('washing machine , refrigerator'), which slightly disrupts the fluency of referencing and logical flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and collocations such as 'considerably', 'substantially', 'universal owner', and 'dramatically'. However, there are noticeable word-form and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', 'owner' instead of 'ownership', 'similary', and 'householdwork'. Furthermore, 'almost universal owner' is an awkward collocation. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is adequate to convey the trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('while amount of time spent on housework decline substantially'). There are several grammatical errors, such as article omissions ('The two line charts illustrates', 'washing machine were most common appliances'), subject-verb agreement issues ('amount... decline'), and awkward phrasing ('reached to 100%', 'reching only 10 hours'). Punctuation and spacing errors are also frequent. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the response solidly in the band 6 category.
