Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts below illustrate different electrical appliances ownerships and the time that was spent doing household chores in one country during the time period between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, during 2000, the percentages of the households using vacuum cleaners and refrigerators intersected at approximately 98%. However, in 1960, 70% of the citizens were using washing machines and vacuum cleaners.

The percentage of refrigerator owners was zero in 1920; however, it experienced a sharp increase during the next years. The usage of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners rose significantly to 100% in 2000 and remained unchanged in 2019. Furthermore, the percentages of vacuum cleaners and washing machines rose from 30% to 70% between 1920 and 1960. Additionally, the usage of washing machines decreased in 1980 but again rose during 2000 and 2019.

The number of hours of housework per week in each house was highest in 1920. Moreover, it decreased during 1940 and reached up to 20 in 1960. During 1980 and 2000, it remained relatively stable, but again it was slightly decreased in 2019 which was only 10 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The overview is somewhat weak, as it jumps straight into a specific detail about 2000 rather than giving a broad summary of the main trends. However, key data points are generally well selected and accurately reported, such as the rise in appliance ownership to 100% by the end of the period and the corresponding decline in housework hours from 50 to 11 hours per week. While the overview lacks a more comprehensive macro-statement, the body paragraphs successfully highlight key trends and data shifts over the 99-year span, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged coherently with a clear overall progression from appliance ownership trends to housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different categories of data. Cohesive devices are generally deployed adequately, using words like 'however', 'furthermore', and 'additionally' to connect ideas. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the sudden transition into the overview sentence about the year 2000. Overall, the logical organization is clear, and the flow is sufficient to guide the reader through the data without confusion, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data trends such as 'sharp increase', 'rose significantly', and 'remained relatively stable'. There are a few slightly unnatural phrasings or word choices, such as 'electrical appliances ownerships' instead of 'ownership of electrical appliances' and 'percentages of the households using' rather than 'households with'. However, these vocabulary errors do not impede communication, and the writer makes successful attempts at less common functional phrases. This fits the Band 6.0 descriptors well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time-marker prepositional phrases effectively. There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'during 2000' instead of 'in 2000' and 'it was slightly decreased in 2019 which was only 10 hours', where punctuation and clause connection could be smoother. Nevertheless, the majority of simple sentences are error-free, and the errors present do not impede overall comprehension, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.0 grammar.
