Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points are correctly cited, such as appliance figures in 1920 and their eventual peaks, alongside the decline in housework hours from 50 to 11. Although there are minor grammatical inaccuracies in data reporting, the overall information is accurate and well-selected, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by an overview, body paragraphs detailing the appliance ownership, and a final paragraph discussing the housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "In terms of number of hours of housework" and "Afterwards", although there are occasional slightly awkward transitions or repetitive referencing structures. Overall, the logical sequence is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 7 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, using terms such as "ownership", "appliance", "proportion", and various verbs of change like "surged" and "decline". However, there are noticeable word-class and collocation errors, such as "a drastical fall thrpughtout" (drastic fall throughout), "a considerable rose" (considerable rise), and "overtaking both, reaching at". Spelling slips also occur, such as "thrpughtout" and "emergining". These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing introductory phrases and participial clauses like "having the least percentage of household". However, grammatical control is inconsistent, resulting in frequent errors such as missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms (e.g., "reaching at 70%", "showed a drastical incline by overtooking both"). While these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear, the presence of frequent non-systematic errors prevents the response from achieving a Band 7.
