Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts illustrate the alterations of the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours spent doing housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of ownership for refrigerator increased dramatically over the period. While the number of hours spent doing housework per week decreased steadily throughout the period.

Moving into more detail, in 1920, the percentage of ownership of refrigerator reported as 0 and it inclined considerably by 100% in 1980, which levelled off from 1980 to 2019. Similarly, the ownership of vacuum cleaner stood at 30% in 1920, which increased rapidly from 30% to 100% in 8 decades then it was plateaued for next 19 years. Moreover, the percentage of ownership of washing machine was the highest in 1920, which faced fluctuations and accounted for around 74% in 2019.

Furthermore, the number of hours of housework showed a decreasing trend, which was 50% in 1920 and declined gradually by 30% in 1960. After that, it fell slightly to 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on the appliance ownership and the hours spent doing housework. An adequate overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as the dramatic increase in refrigerator ownership and the steady decline in housework hours. However, there are some minor data inaccuracies; for instance, the student states that refrigerator ownership in 1920 was reported as '0' (the actual figure was 2%) and misinterprets the housework hours in 1960 and 2019 ('30%' instead of 20 hours, and '10%' instead of approximately 11 hours). Despite these slight misreadings of the scale, the key trends and comparisons are generally well-selected and reported, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by a two-sentence overview, and then moves into detailed body paragraphs analyzing the data. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the charts, such as 'Overall', 'Moving into more detail', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore'. However, some cohesive links and referencing are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'While the number of hours spent doing housework per week decreased steadily throughout the period' as a standalone fragment. Paragraphing is used appropriately, resulting in a coherent structure that easily warrants a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing functional reporting terms such as 'alterations', 'percentage of ownership', 'levelled off', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as saying refrigerator ownership 'inclined considerably' rather than 'increased considerably', and stating that appliance ownership 'reported as 0' instead of 'was reported as'. Additionally, passive and active voice confusion appears when describing data points. While less common lexical items are attempted, inaccuracies in collocation prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'which levelled off from 1980 to 2019', 'which increased rapidly from 30% to 100% in 8 decades then it was plateaued for next 19 years'). Grammatical errors do occur, notably with tense consistency, missing prepositions, and awkward passive constructions (e.g., 'then it was plateaued' instead of 'plateaued', and 'ownership of refrigerator reported as 0'). Punctuation and sentence structures occasionally cause minor stumbling, but communication is never impeded. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
