Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line chart illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, all the categories experienced an upward trajectory, while the number of hours per week followed the opposite pattern throughout the period. In addition, the vacuum cleaner and refrigerator ended as the highest; in contrast, the washing machine finished as the lowest.
Looking first at the categories that showed growth, the refrigerator stood at only 0% in 1920 before climbing significantly to 100% in 1980. Regarding the vacuum cleaner, it increased gradually, reaching 100% in 2000 before remaining stable at around 100% from 2000 to 2019. As for the washing machine, it rose steadily from 30% to 70% between 1920 and 1960 before fluctuating slightly from 70% to 75% between 1960 and 2019.
Turning to the remaining category, the number of hours of housework per week declined steadily from 50 hours to 10 hours between 1920 and 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear summary of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The main features are identified correctly, such as the overall upward trends in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the student states that the refrigerator stood at '0% in 1920' (the chart shows around 2%) and that housework declined to '10 hours' (the chart shows 11 hours). Additionally, the initial percentage for the washing machine is cited as 30% in 1920, whereas the data indicates 40%. Despite these minor data discrepancies, the overall response successfully addresses the prompt with a clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organised into four paragraphs, following a clear structure: introduction, overview, body paragraph for appliances, and body paragraph for housework hours. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at the categories', and 'Turning to the remaining category'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sets of data. Referencing and progression are clear throughout the text, ensuring a smooth and logical flow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. Phrases like 'upward trajectory', 'followed the opposite pattern', 'climbing significantly', and 'remaining stable' show an ability to describe trends effectively. While there are some minor inaccuracies or slight overgeneralisations in data interpretation, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success, though more sophisticated phrasing could elevate the response further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as subordinate clauses ('while the number of hours per week followed the opposite pattern') and participial phrases ('reaching 100% in 2000 before remaining stable'). Grammatical accuracy is generally high, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Control of tense usage across past and present timeframes is handled well. Punctuation is accurate, and minor slips do not impede communication at all.
