The line chart illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, all the categories experienced an upward trajectory, while the number of hours per week followed the opposite pattern throughout the period. In addition, the vacuum cleaner and refrigerator ended as the highest; in contrast, the washing machine finished as the lowest.
Looking first at the categories that showed growth, the refrigerator stood at only 0% in 1920 before climbing significantly to 100% in 1980. Regarding the vacuum cleaner, it increased gradually, reaching 100% in 2000 before remaining stable at around 100% from 2000 to 2019. As for the washing machine, it rose steadily from 30% to 70% between 1920 and 1960 before fluctuating slightly from 70% to 75% between 1960 and 2019.
Turning to the remaining category, the number of hours of housework per week declined steadily from around 50 hours to 15 hours between 1920 and 1980 before remaining stable at around 15 hours from 1980 to 2000, then it decreased slightly to nearly 10 hours by the end of the period.
