Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts illustrate the trends in the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours spent doing housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of ownership for refrigerator increased dramatically over the period, whereas the number of hours spent doing housework per week decreased steadily throughout the period.

Moving into more detail, in 1920, the percentage of ownership of refrigerator was reported as 0% and it inclined considerably to 100% in 1980, which levelled off from 1980 to 2019. Similarly, the ownership of vacuum cleaner stood at 30% in 1920, which increased rapidly from 30% to 100% over 8 decades then it was plateaued for next 19 years. Moreover, the percentage of ownership of washing machine was the highest in 1920, which experienced fluctuations and accounted for around 74% in 2019.

Furthermore, the number of hours of housework showed a decreasing trend, which was 50% in 1920 and declined gradually to 20% in 1960. After that, it fell slightly to 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student covers all parts of the task well, selecting and reporting the main features from both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours chart. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, capturing the main overall trends. Key data points are correctly cited, such as the refrigerator rising to 100% and housework hours declining. However, there are minor inaccuracies in data interpretation: the student states the refrigerator ownership in 1920 was reported as 0% (the data shows around 2%) and describes housework hours as a percentage ("50% in 1920" and "to 20% in 1960") rather than hours per week. Despite these minor data inaccuracies, the response effectively highlights the main trends and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organized logically with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introductory paragraph, followed by a concise overview, and then moves into detailed body paragraphs categorized appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Moving into more detail', 'Similarly', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific data descriptions, resulting in a coherent and easy-to-read text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'dramatically', 'considerably', 'levelled off', and 'fluctuations'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'percentage of ownership of refrigerator was reported as 0% and it inclined considerably' (where 'inclined' is incorrectly used for an upward trend instead of 'increased' or 'rose') and 'it was plateaued' (incorrect passive voice). These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms successfully, such as relative clauses ('appliances and the number of hours spent...'). There is a good variety of structures employed throughout the response. However, several grammatical errors persist, including awkward phrasing and tense/voice issues like 'it was plateaued for next 19 years' (missing article and incorrect passive) and minor preposition or article slips. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, supporting a solid Band 6 performance.
