Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The chart compares the percentage of homes with electrical devices and number of hours spent per week doing housework in one nation over the period of 99 years.
Overall, all categories witnessed an upward trend, albiet at varying rates. Of particular note, refrigerator recorded the sharpest rise, while per week housework consistently showed decline in number of hours.
Looking first at washing machine, the figure stood at 40 percent, before witnessing a gradual increase to above 70 percent in 2019. A similar pattern can be observed in vacuum cleaner, which started at 30 percent and subsequently rose 100 percent in 2000. Meanwhile, refrigerator followed a sharp trajectory, starting at zero percent and ultimately rising to 100 percent in 1980. Notably, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner overtook washing machine in 1940 and 1960 respectively.
Turning to housework per week, its figure began at 50 hours per week, after which it dropped considerably to 20 hours in 1960. Due to its downward trend, housework per week fell to 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting on both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours chart. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the general upward trend in appliance ownership alongside the steady decline in housework hours. Main features and key comparisons are well-selected and clearly stated, such as refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching 100 percent, and the specific crossover points mentioned. Data points are generally accurate according to the visual reference, demonstrating a strong grasp of the source material. The response meets all core requirements for Task Achievement at a high level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The text is logically organised with a clear overall progression. It begins with a helpful introductory paraphrase and a concise overview paragraph, followed by well-structured body paragraphs examining the appliances and housework hours separately. Cohesive devices such as 'Looking first at', 'A similar pattern', 'Meanwhile', and 'Turning to' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is logical and appropriate, contributing to the overall readability and smooth flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to Task 1 reporting, using terms like 'upward trend', 'sharp trajectory', 'gradual increase', and 'considerable'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and missing prepositions, such as spelling 'albiet' instead of 'albeit', stating that a vacuum cleaner 'rose 100 percent in 2000' rather than reaching 100 percent of households, and omitting 'the' before 'refrigerator recorded'. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main trends clearly and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating participial clauses and time markers effectively (e.g., 'before witnessing a gradual increase', 'starting at zero percent and ultimately rising'). Grammatical control is generally good, though there are a few minor errors, such as article omission ('refrigerator recorded' instead of 'the refrigerator recorded') and slight awkwardness in phrasing ('per week housework consistently showed decline'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well throughout.
