Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover all parts of the prompt by describing both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours chart. An overview is provided, noting the general increase in appliance ownership and decrease in housework time. However, there are several factual inaccuracies in reading the data. For instance, the student states that refrigerators had 'no ownerships in initial years' (it was 2%, not zero) and claims that refrigerators and washing machines reached 100% in 2000 (washing machines reached 75% in 2019, while refrigerators reached 100%). Furthermore, the sentence regarding vacuum cleaners ('highest in 2019 by 75 percentage') confuses the data for washing machines. Additionally, the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum, containing 148 words. These inaccuracies and the length shortfall prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is structured into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs focusing separately on appliances and housework hours. This shows an attempt at logical organization. However, paragraphing is somewhat basic and progression is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and referencing issues, such as the repetitive 'Over the years' transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes mechanical. While the overall arrangement is clear enough to follow, the lack of smooth transitions and the presence of choppy sentences prevent the score from reaching higher bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'ownership', 'electrical appliances', and 'housework'. However, lexical control is weak, with frequent awkward collocations and word-form errors, such as 'refrigerator have no ownerships', 'every household own', and 'percentage' used instead of 'percent'. There is also a reliance on basic vocabulary and repetitive phrases. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic, these persistent errors and limited range restrict the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with occasional, often faulty, attempts at complex structures. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('refrigerator have', 'household own'), missing articles, and confusing phrasing like 'accounted 50 in 1920 decreased, accounted 50 in 1920 had to reduced'. Punctuation is basic, and while the errors do not completely obscure the meaning, their frequency causes difficulty for the reader.
