Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the provided charts. The introduction accurately paraphrases the prompt, and an overall trend is clearly stated. Key features are highlighted, such as the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reaching 100% ownership by 1980 and remaining constant, contrasted with the washing machine's fluctuating pattern. The decrease in total weekly housework hours from 50 to around 10-11 hours is also properly noted. While the reporting is generally accurate, there are slight approximations in the data description (such as stating 10 hours instead of 11 in the final paragraph), but these do not detract from the overall clarity and fulfillment of the task. The response meets all requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 in Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. It begins with an introduction, moves to an overview paragraph, details the appliance ownership data in the third paragraph, and concludes with the housework hours in the final paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct visual elements. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, with phrases like 'Overall', 'While', and 'However' signaling relationships between ideas. However, referencing and transitions occasionally feel slightly mechanical, and minor mechanical issues like missing articles ('the washing machine') occur. Overall, the essay flows well and is easy to follow, justifying a solid Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'drastically decreased', 'fluctuating', 'gradually rose', and 'constant'. There are some word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'reached maximum till 2019' instead of 'reached a peak by 2019' and 'the figure become constant' (tense inconsistency). Additionally, 'suchaswashing' contains a spacing error. Despite these minor limitations, the vocabulary used is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, aligning with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, utilizing subordinate clauses introduced by 'while', 'as', and 'where'. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles (e.g., 'having washing machine', 'refrigerator was least common'), tense inconsistencies ('become' instead of 'became'), and minor punctuation or spacing oversights. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication or obscure the meaning of the data presented. The structural variety and overall control fit the Band 6.0 descriptor well.
