Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student attempts to cover the main trends in both charts, noting the overall increase in appliance ownership and the corresponding decline in housework hours. However, there are several factual inaccuracies and misreadings of the data. For instance, the student states that in 1920, 0% of households had a refrigerator, whereas the graph indicates approximately 2%. Furthermore, the claim that all houses had a refrigerator by 1980 and a vacuum cleaner by 2000 does not align fully with the visual data for all items, and the summary of final figures contains minor inconsistencies. While an overview is present, the inaccuracies in data reporting prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response features a basic overall structure, beginning with an introductory paraphrase and an overview paragraph, followed by a body paragraph detailing the data. However, the organisation of the body paragraph is confusing and lacks clear progression, grouping disparate data points together in a run-on manner. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively (e.g., 'then after it show's', 'after that'), and referencing is sometimes unclear. Paragraphing is also problematic, as the second and third sentences form a combined block that should ideally be separated into distinct paragraphs for appliances and time spent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple terms like 'houses', 'having', and 'show'. There are several word choice and collocation errors, such as 'household per week' instead of 'households', 'all the household are having' instead of 'owned', and 'bothe the facilities'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are limited and often inaccurate. Spelling is mostly acceptable, but lexical control is insufficient for higher bands, causing some distraction for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and present continuous forms ('are having') rather than appropriate past tenses for historical data. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('all the household are having', '0% of household are having'), tense errors, and missing plural markers. Punctuation is also weak, with run-on sentences and spacing errors before commas and full stops. These frequent errors occasionally impede smooth reading.
