Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of both charts, such as the overall rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the refrigerator started at 0% in 1920 (whereas the graph shows around 2%) and misinterprets the washing machine figures, claiming it reached 61% in 1960 and then dropped, whereas the data shows it rose to 70% in 1960. Furthermore, the inverse relationship between rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours is not fully integrated. These data misreadings and underdeveloped comparisons place the response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific trends. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. Transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and cohesive devices are minimal or mechanically applied, such as the repeated use of 'Furthermore' and 'Again'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of data lacks a clear logical strategy, with washing machine data split awkwardly across sentences. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the relationships between the data points. This performance aligns with the Band 5.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and contains numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the writing. Examples of errors include 'appliancs', 'vaccume', 'Refriggerator', and 'housholds'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to trends, such as 'variation', 'ownerships', and 'growth', but these are frequently misspelled or imprecise (e.g., 'little declined in the middled of the age'). The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic trends, but persistent errors in spelling and morphology cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentences, but grammatical accuracy is quite low throughout the text. There are frequent errors in verb tense usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The line chart compared' (instead of compares), 'it increased 100%' (omitting prepositions like 'to'), 'it wa 40% of houshold' (missing articles and pluralization), and 'It increased 61% to 70%'. Punctuation is also erratic in places. While simple structures are generally understandable, attempts at more complex structures frequently result in faulty grammar that impedes communication at times, reflecting a Band 5.0 level.
