Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart depicts the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in one country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is clear that the usage of electrical appliances increased dramatically over time; in contrast, the number of hours per week spent on housework declined significantly.

In 1920, the sharpest rise was recorded in refrigerators, which grew from 0% to 100% over the period. However, the usage of washing machines was 40% initially, as compared to vacuum cleaners which were 30%. Additionally, the usage of vacuum cleaners soared to 100% in 2019. In contrast, the utilization of washing machines stood at just over 70% from 1920 to 2019.

A significant decline was recorded in the number of hours spent on housework per week. Initially, 50 hours per week devoted to domestic chores were documented in 1920, which had plummeted to 20 hours per week in 1960. Meanwhile, the figure fluctuated slightly and came to an end in 2019 at almost 10 hours per week, primarily due to increased electrical appliances usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing an overview and selecting key features from both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours chart. The introduction clearly summarises the main trends. However, there are minor factual inaccuracies in the body paragraphs. For instance, the text states that refrigerators 'grew from 0% to 100%', whereas the chart shows them starting at 2% in 1920. Additionally, the washing machine trend is described as 'standing at just over 70% from 1920 to 2019', but the chart clearly shows it starting at 40% in 1920 before rising to 70-75% later. Despite these slight misreadings of the data, the main comparisons and trends are successfully reported, placing this response solidly at band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organized into a logical four-paragraph structure, including a clear introduction, an overall summary, and two body paragraphs separating appliance ownership from housework hours. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', 'However', and 'Additionally' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct trends, resulting in clear logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, using appropriate terms like 'depicts', 'fluctuated', 'plummeted', and 'utilization'. There are occasional slight lexical inaccuracies, such as using 'usage of refrigerators' when referring to appliance ownership, or saying 'increased electrical appliances usage' instead of 'increased usage of electrical appliances'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is more than sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, meeting the requirements for band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and comparative structures, such as 'which grew from 0% to 100%' and 'as compared to vacuum cleaners which were 30%'. Grammatical accuracy is generally good, with frequent error-free sentences. Minor slips occur, such as the awkward phrasing 'primarily due to increased electrical appliances usage' (where 'appliance' should ideally be singular attributive or possessive), but these errors do not impede communication.
