Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully highlights the main features of both charts, capturing the overall trends in appliance ownership and the corresponding decrease in housework hours. However, there are several misinterpretations and inaccurate data points reported in the body paragraphs. For instance, the student states that in 1920 the washing machine and vacuum cleaner did domestic duties for 50 hours per week, whereas the chart shows total housework hours across all three appliances were at 50. Furthermore, there are minor inaccuracies in reading specific percentages, such as claiming the refrigerator was 'not famous at that time' in 1920 when it was actually at 2%. The overview attempts to capture the main trends, but the lack of precision in reporting data pulls the task achievement score down into the mid-range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into three paragraphs with a clear attempt at an introduction and body paragraphs detailing the charts. However, logical progression is hindered by confusing transitions and fragmented sentence structures, particularly in the final paragraph where sentences trail off abruptly (e.g., 'fell from 20 hours to 10 hours per we'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'followed by' and 'while'. Paragraphing is also somewhat erratic, blending multiple trends into single, cluttered sentences. Referencing between the appliances and the hours spent doing housework is not always clear, causing the reader to work harder to follow the progression of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'acquisition', 'allocated', and 'domestic duties'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'running hours' instead of 'hours of operation', 'electronic equipment' for household appliances, and 'went high' instead of 'increased significantly'. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'cloths' instead of 'clothes' and 'centaury' instead of 'century'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the general topic, these persistent inaccuracies limit the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('washing machine accounted for 40%'), incorrect prepositions ('running hours till 21st centaury'), and awkward passive/active confusions ('washing machine accounted for 60%'). Furthermore, several sentences are incomplete or run-on, such as 'In 1920, washing machine accounted for 40% as an home appliance for washing cloths, followed by vacuum cleaner accounted for 30%, electronic device used to store foods.' These errors frequently cause strain for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band.
