Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two line charts illustrate fluctuations in the transformation of electrical appliances in household work and the number of hours per week spent doing domestic tasks in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, all of the products were being greatly used by people in their daily tasks. Refrigerators began at zero in 1920 before their usage peaked in 1980. Consequently, vacuum cleaners also made significant growth, while washing machines saw ups and downs over the period.

Refrigerators started the year 1920 with 0%. However, this figure saw substantial growth, reaching just above 50% by 1940, 90 percent in 1960, and finally levelling at 100% from 1980 to 2019. Consequently, vacuum cleaners accounted for 30% at the beginning, before they constantly surged to 100 percent in the next 8 decades, where they balanced this trend till 2019. Washing machines showed a somewhat different pattern. They were the leading appliance in 1920, climbing from 40% to 70% by 1960, where they dropped to 60% in 1980, and then gradually increased to approximately 75% by the end of the timeline.

Regarding the hours of working, people spent relatively less time using these appliances: 50 hours/week at the start, then gradually reducing to 10 hours every week over the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student attempts to cover all parts of the prompt by describing the appliance ownership and the hours of housework from 1920 to 2019. An overview is provided, and key trends are identified, such as the rise in refrigerators and vacuum cleaners alongside a decline in housework hours. However, there are some minor factual inaccuracies compared to the source data; for instance, refrigerators started at 2% in 1920 rather than 0%, and housework hours reduced to approximately 11 hours by 2019 rather than 10. Despite these minor discrepancies, the main features are sufficiently reported and supported with relevant data points, fulfilling the core requirements of Task 1.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the appliances and the housework hours respectively. Cohesive devices are employed with reasonable success, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'Consequently', though the use of 'Consequently' is occasionally unnatural in context. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct trends. While logical progression is generally maintained throughout, referencing and transitions between ideas can feel slightly mechanical in places.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuations', 'substantial growth', and 'levelling'. There are occasional awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'transformation of electrical appliances in household work' and 'hours of working', which slightly detract from precision. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions of trends easily.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

A mix of simple and complex sentence structures is used throughout the response, including relative clauses and participle phrases like 'climbing from 40% to 70% by 1960'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'products were being greatly used' and 'where they balanced this trend till 2019', but these do not impede overall communication. Complex structures are attempted with varying degrees of success, putting the grammar securely within the Band 6 descriptor range.
